Housing and Homelessness for People Living with Disability
Housing and homelessness continues to be a significant issue for people living with disability in South West WA despite the disability sector raising concerns with government, ministers and the Department of Communities. Advocacy WA have written a research paper on this issue and shared it with the sector and government.
Our main findings included the need for the WA government to sign up to the National Construction Code 2022 which requires all new builds to be built to Silver Liveability, a minimum accessibility standard. This would add around $3000 to a new build but open the rental and sales real estate market to a much bigger customer base. As our society continues to age accessible houses will be in much greater demand. Only WA and NSW have refused to sign up to the Code. The paper can be found HERE.
