Youth Consultant Training – Economic Participation Project

Manjimup CRC

February 2024

In February, Community Advocate Sara Gunning delivered training in Manjimup to young people participating in the Economic Participation Project. This popular project gives young people with lived experience of disability a paid training and work opportunity. Young people from across the shire took part in the full-day training at Manjimup CRC where they developed their teamwork, communications and problem solving skills while learning about different kinds of disability, and the accessibility needs of people across the community.

The training day prepared young people aged 15 – 25, to visit local businesses and determine how accessible they are for people with disability.  Amber, Rebecca, Riley, Regan and Kelly then tested their new knowledge and skills when they visited participating businesses across the region to see how accessible they were, and suggest improvements.

Manjimup CRC, Southern Forest Arts, Stellar Violets, Northcliffe CRC, Walpole Visitor Centre and Walpole CRC are among the businesses who will soon receive an accessibility report from the youth consultants which will highlight areas for improvement.

Since April 2022, 50 young people from across the South West region have taken part in this amazing program which develops the soft skills of young people with disabilities and provides them with the self-assurance to understand and communicate their own accessibility needs in the workplace, while also advocating for other people with disability in their communities.

During this period, 50 South West businesses have augmented their capacity and confidence in engaging and employing young people with disabilities, while making their premises and customer service more accessible and inclusive.
